Hymn Source = The Hymnal (1911), Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A.

Anonymous Latin Text (500s or 600s)

English Translation (1852) by James Russell Woodford (1820-1885), Anglican Bishop of Ely (1873-1885)

Christ, above all glory seated,

King triumphant, strong to save,

Dying, Thou hast death defeated,

Buried, Thou hast spoiled the grave.

+++++

Thou art gone where now is given

What no mortal might could gain,

On the eternal throne of heaven

In Thy Father’s power to reign.

+++++

There Thy kingdoms all adore Thee,

Heaven above and earth below;

While the depths of hell before Thee

Trembling and amazed bow.

+++++

We, O Lord, with hearts adoring,

Follow Thee beyond the sky:

Hear our prayers Thy grace imploring,

Lift our souls to Thee on high;

+++++

So when Thou again in glory

On the clouds of heaven shalt shine,

We Thy flock may stand before Thee,

Owned for evermore as Thine.

+++++

Hail!  all hail!  In Thee confiding,

Jesus, Thee shall all adore,

In Thy Father’s might abiding

With one Spirit evermore.

Original Latin text by St. Gregory the Great (circa 540-604), Bishop of Rome

English Translation (1858) by Ray Palmer (1808-1887), U.S. Congregationalist minister

1.  O Christ, our King, Creator, Lord,

Saviour of all who trust Thy word,

To them who seek Thee ever near,

Now to our praises bend Thine ear.

2.  In Thy dear cross a grace is found–

It flows from every streaming wound–

Whose power our inbred sin controls,

Breaks the firm bond, and frees our souls.

3.  Thou didst create the stars of night;

Yet Thou has veiled in flesh Thy light,

Hast deigned a mortal form to wear,

A mortal’s painful lot to bear.

4.  When Thou didst hang upon the tree,

The quaking earth acknowledged Thee;

When Thou didst there yield up Thy breath,

Then world grew dark as shades of death.

5.  Now in the Father’s glory high,

Great Conqueror, never more to die,

Us by Thy mighty power defend,

And reign through ages without end.

1.  Alleluia! Sing to Jesus! his the scepter, his the throne;

Alleluia! his the triumph, his the victory alone;

Hark! the songs of peaceful Zion thunder like a mighty flood;

Jesus out of every nation hath redeemed us by his blood.

2.  Alleluia! not as orphans are we left in sorrow now;

Alleluia! his is near us, faith believes, nor questions how:

though the cloud from sight received him, when the forty days were o’er,

shall our hearts for forget his promise, “I am with you evermore”?

3.  Alleluia! Bread of heaven, thou on earth our food, our stay!

Alleluia! here the sinful flee to thee from day to day:

Intercessor, friend of sinners, earth’s Redeemer, plead for me,

where the songs of all the sinful sweep across the crystal sea.

4.  Alleluia! King eternal, thee the Lord of lords we own:

Alleluia! born of Mary, earth thy footstool, heaven thy throne:

thou within the veil hast entered, robed in flesh, our great High Priest;

thou on earth both Priest and Victim in the eucharistic feast.

5.  Alleluia! sing to Jesus! his the scepter his the throne;

Alleluia! his the triumph, his the victory alone;

Hark! the songs of holy Zion thunder like a mighty flood;

Jesus out of every nation hath redeemed us by his blood.

1.  Hark! ten thousand harps and voices

Sound the note of praise above:

Jesus reigns, and heaven rejoices;

Jesus reigns, the God of love,

See, He sits on yonder throne;

Jesus rules the world alone.

2.  Jesus, hail! Whose glory brightens

All above, and makes it fair;

Lord of live, Thy smile enlightens,

Cheers, and charms Thy people here.

When we think of love like Thine,

Lord, we own it love divine.

3.  King of glory, reign for ever;

Thine an everlasting crown;

Nothing from Thy love shall sever

Those whom Thou has made Thine own;

Happy objects of Thy grace,

Destined to behold Thy face.

4.  Saviour, hasten Thine appearing;

Bring, O bring the glorious day,

When, the awful summons hearing,

Heaven and earth shall pass away;

Then with golden harps, we’ll sing:

“Glory, glory, to our King.”

Hymn Source = The Hymnal 1982, of The Episcopal Church

Words by the Reverend Georgia Harkness (1891-1974), U.S. United Methodist theologian; she wrote the text for the Second Assembly of the World Council of Churches (1952)

1.  Hope of the world, thou Christ of great compassion,

speak to our fearful hearts by conflict rent.

Save us, thy people, from consuming passion,

who by our own false hopes and aims are spent.

2.  Hope of the world, God’s gift from highest heaven,

bringing to hungry souls the bread of life,

still let thy Spirit unto us be given

to heal earth ‘s wounds and end her bitter strife.

3.  Hope of the world, afoot on dusty highways,

showing to wandering souls the path of light,

walk thou beside us lest the tempting byways

lure us away from thee to endless night.

4.  Hope of the world, who by thy cross didst save us

from death and dark despair, from sin and guilt,

we render back the love thy mercy gave us;

take thous our lives, and use them as thou wilt.

5.  Hope of the world, O Christ, o’er death victorious,

who by this sign didst conquer grief and pain,

we wouldst be faithful to thy gospel glorious;

thou art our Lord!  Thou dost for ever reign!

Hymn Source = The Hymnal (1933), of the Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A.

Words by the Reverend Maltbie Davenport Babcock (1858-1901), U.S. Presbyterian minister, humanitarian, and admirer of nature

1.  This is my Father’s world,

And to my listening ears,

All nature sings, and round me rings

The music of the spheres.

This is my Father’s world:

I rest me in the thought

Of rocks and trees, of skies and seas;

His hand the wonders wrought.

2.  This is my Father’s world,

The birds their carols raise,

The morning light, the lily white,

Declare their Maker’s praise.

This is my Father’s world:

He shines in all that’s fair;

In the rustling grass

I hear him pass,

He speaks to me everywhere.

3.  This is my Father’s world,

O let me ne’er forget

That though the wrong seems oft so strong

God is the ruler yet.

This is my Father’s world:

The battle is not done;

Jesus who died shall be satisfied,

And earth and heaven be one.

We come into your courts with praise, O God, and sing in glad adoration.  You fill the temple with your majestic presence; we bow in awe at the sight of your holiness.  Your goodness and mercy shall follow us all the days of our life, as in Christ we shall dwell in your house forever.

Christ the King: Prayer of Confession   4 comments

From time to time I like to share prayers from the liturgical books I collect.  Earlier today I wrote a devotional for the Feast of Christ the King, so prayers for that occasion occupy my mind.  Thus I share with you, O reader, this excerpt from the Book of Common Worship (1993), of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).

Righteous God,

you have crowned Jesus Christ as Lord of all.

We confess that we have not bowed before him,

and are slow to acknowledge his rule.

We give allegiance to the powers of this world,

and fail to be governed by justice and love.

In your mercy, forgive us.

Raise us to acclaim as ruler of all,

that we may be loyal ambassadors,

obeying the commands of our Lord Jesus Christ.  Amen.
